The Swedish prison and probation service have experience from working with a program to activate the bystander amongst prison and probation staff, to intervene in a constructive way in case of harassment or other forms of violence amongst staff. The training aims at learning to identify harmful and discriminatory behaviour and to learn how to stop these behaviours. The program includes challenging stereotypical and harmful gender norms.
What were the trainings about? The trainings include the bystander approach, broadening the perspectives on violence and challenging gender norms. The training delivers theory on these issues, self-reflection-exercises and scenario training. The target group for the training is prison and probation officers.
What has been your experience with these trainings and their effectiveness? Our experience is that the staff becomes more aware of harmful behaviour and develops a readiness to intervene in a constructive way. The staff also learns to model a nonviolent behaviour and to acknowledge harmful behaviour from inmates/clients.
Would you be willing to share insights and/or materials with NHC and KAPS?Yes.
We do not have one specific training. The topic of bullying in juvenile detention settings is small part of many other trainings. This topic has not been a big problem for us, but we could certainly learn more about it.
